The opening of the Austin Street Gallery fulfills a dream of Shirley and Clint Blackman. Shirley wanted to continue her career in art and Clint wanted to share that career with his experience in business. Clint's avocation of saltwater fishing and Rockport's reputation as an art center made it the perfect location for their dream. The Austin Street Gallery will represent other artists in addition to Shirley.

Coastal Creations Art Gallery is a working studio & gallery showcasing the original acrylic paintings, fine art prints, & note cards of local artist Lera Harris. Her paintings capture the Rockport scene - windswept trees, baitstands, shrimpboats, birds & beaches - hoping to preserve on canvas the uniqueness of the area before it slips away. Area potter Ann Sciba is featured, along with wood designers Gordan Smith, Philip Roets and David Lauffenburger plus stained glass artist Joyce Kaminski. Peggy Thompson (Texas by Design) is the newest addition to the gallery. She has embroidered T-shirts using Lera's paintings as her pattern. There is something for everyone in Lera's gallery - paintings, pottery, wood designs, stained glass, and designed T-shirts - All sold excusively at Coastal Creations. Simon Michael (1905 - 2002) - If one were reduced to a single word to describe Michael's art that word would have to be "COLOR". A complex individual, Simon Michael had an unparalleled love of life, and he viewed the world as few others saw it. He spent his entire life devoted to art. A recognized master of oil, acrylic, watercolor and sculpture, he had an equally honored reputation as a teacher. He was a colorist in the full sense of the word. "Give them diamonds and rubies" he would tell his students. Simon Michael's first exhibition was held in Paris in 1924. For almost a century he spent his life creating, teaching and collecting fine art. *** Simon Michael's works in oil, acrylic, and watercolor, as well as his extensive private art collection are on display. His collection includes many bronze sculptures from various artists, and early paintings from Dalhart Windberg, a former student of Simon Michael's . A sculpture from a lifelong friend, Lincoln Borglum, the creator of Mount Rushmore is also included. The gallery is open daily to the public. Hours of operation are 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m..
